1. About Almshouses
The Hospital of God owns 63 almshouses in Greatham for people
of pensionable age. Most of these are modern flats and bungalows
offering a variety of
sheltered
accommodation and have a warden call system installed which can
be used to summon assistance in the case of an emergency.
Almshouse residents occupy their homes under licence and pay a contribution to the operating
cost of the properties. This currently ranges from £50 per
week to £145 per week. Included within this contribution
is all maintenance, water rates, warden service and in some cases
heating.
The new almshouses were opened in July 2007 by the Right Reverend Michael Sadgrove, the Dean of Durham Cathedral.
They offer one and two bedroom accommodation for older people in the sheltered grounds of Greatham Hospital.
The Hospital of God also manage the Fox Almshouses at Norton. These are situated off Norton High Street and offer one bedroom accommodation in the Fox Almshouses own grounds.
2. Almshouses Availability
Almshouses
are available to those of more limited financial means who are
