The Hospital of God Care Services at Minerva House, Horden is a new and innovative resource for people with dementia and their carers and is available to anyone living in the East Durham area.

The Services we provide are:

Day Services
 

Guests are picked up by our minibus and the first part of the day is spent settling in and with groupgames and discussions.  Guests do not have to take part if they do not want to and may sit quietly orin small groups if they wish.

Transport is provided in our adapted mini-bus which has a tailgate lift.  Lunch is provided on the premisesat a cost of £4.50 per day.  There is a choice of activities with crafts, sing-a-longs and a variety ofenjoyable games.  Transport home is provided at the end of each session.

We also provide personal care including assistance with bathing in our purpose built bathroom, hairdressing, shaving, nail care and a variety of therapies.

The present cost of a full day at Minerva House is £31.00 excluding transport (40p per mile). Lunch is an additional £5.00.

 


Community Pastimes
 

Community Pastimes is for people who want to have one to one support to carry out activities in thecommunity or at home.  These activities could be going shopping, attending leisure facilities, the cinemaor museums.  We go to tea dances or out for lunch or to the seaside.  We also help people visit family or friends.

Activities at home through Community Pastimes include pursuing hobbies, board games, carrying outcraft activities and listening to music.  We can also prepare snacks and provide personal care at home if it is needed.

The service is available 24 hours a day 365 days a year and the sessions are set on individual needs. If the person is assessed as being entitled to local authority financial support then the service can be paid for through an individual budget or Direct Payment.  If not then the service can be purchased privately at a day rate of £16.60 per hour.  The cost of any overnight provision is £65.00 per night.

We provide 2 miles travel for each hour of service paid for, for example a 3 hour call will include 6 miles travel. Additional miles are charged at 45p per mile.


Memory Lane Cafes
 

Minerva House operates two Memory Lane Cafes.  These have been set up to provide people with dementia and their carers with opportunities to enjoy social activities together in a friendly and informal environment with the presence of supportive staff.

A variety of entertainment is provided including guest speakers,tea dances, quizzes and concerts.  We also provide information and advice about dementia.  Our day time cafe is at Eden Hill Community Centre, Eden Lane, Peterlee on the last Tuesday of every month from 12 noon to 3 pm.  Our evening care is at Minerva House on the second Tuesday of every month from 6 pm to 9 pm.  Both cafes are free but come along and buy a raffle ticket.


Carer Support Services
 

As well as providing a service for guests with dementia we support carers through our Carer Support Worker who provides information, practical help and social activities.

Coffee Mornings
 

We hold a community coffee morning each Monday  from 9.30 am to 11.00 am.  The coffee morning is free but donations are welcome.  If you want to know more about Minerva House please contact the Manager, Jon Paul Wilson.
